Tekstvak: ANTI HUNGARIAN SIGNS NEAR THE ENTRANCE CLUJ-NAPOCA AIRPORT

During the Funar period anti-Hungarian signs (till 2005 ) could be found near the entrance of Cluj – Napoca airport. Although it was even obligatory to place Hungarians place names at the entrance of the City, according to Romanian law. ( HG 1206 /2001)

Mr Funar was actually well known for his anti-Hungarian language policy and he was even proud about the fact that he was using his authority to do the opposite required by law. There is even an official valid decision of the city counsil of Cluj Napoca to place bilingual signs. ( see below this text )

Nevertheless the usage of the autonomous Hungarian language is still systematically banned till present day. Today Hungarian speaking people make up roughly 16 % of the population. This is the result of the forced assimilation politics of Ceauscescu, since the city consisted of 50 % Hungarians in 1956. The city was also known as Cluj till the Romanian dicator Nicoleau Ceausescu changed the name to Cluj-Napoca.

Hungarians have been subject to marginalization and discrimination. The Romanian language even has a special word for the inferiority of ethnic Hungarians, which is referred to as Bozgor and it means something like Untermensch. However once you’re in Cluj-Napoca it easy to find out how people really are, since this conditioned racist attitude can be easily verified, just learn 6 words of Hungarian :

Jónapot = Goodday pronounce Joonhapot; Viszontlátásra Bye, pronounce Visontlaataashra; Igen = Yes Pronounce Ighen; Nem = No Pronounce Nhem Köszönöm = Thanks Pronounce Khusunum , Tessék = please Pronounce Thesseek

Use these words with a smile and all the friendliness you can give, and you will discover how people react to these words and judge for yourself about their attitude toward the language, which used the majority language in Cluj and which is still spoken by every fifth inhabitant.
